:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew J. Kinney -- Not The Original Essay by Mill : I'm not sure where this edition came from, but it sounds as though it was translated into Chinese and then back into English. I compared it to the original (found via Google), and it is definitely not Mill's original words. Amazon should not be selling such an inaccurate (putting it mildly) edition of On Liberty. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Matthew K. Minerd -- A Keen Analysis of Liberal Thought : In many ways, one is tempted to think that there is no such thing as liberalism alive in America today. It would do many well to read the work of the Englishman Mill in order to understand much of what is called both "liberalism" as well as "individual liberty." In addition, one of the growing issues of the contemporary political landscape in America is a polarization which is wholly unnecessary when analysis is applied the current plane of consideration. The reason for this conspicuous lack of reason for polarization is made obviously clear when one reads a work on liberal thought like that of Mill's. For Mill, individual liberty is a question both of social and political proportions, demanding a lack of interference by both government and social pressures. Additionally, he is keen in his analysis of the need for humility when it comes to humanity's apprehension of the Truth, thus necessitating free speech as a vehicle for the continual realization of those parts of the Truth which man so often forgets because of personal bias. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from jlespin -- a must have for those who appreciate liberty : J.S. Mill can be characterized as a proto-libertarian. It's really amazing how incredibly tolerant he was given the times. While the Russians were carrying out pogroms against Jews because of their intolerance, Mill was able to provide an intellectual defense for tolerating the emerging Latter Day Saints (despite his obvious dislike for them). The beauty of this book is that the arguments are still relevant and directly applicable to the issues. Whereas Marx required armies of Soviet intellectuals in order to stay relevant, you can pick up On Liberty and fully appreciate the arguments. While it can be tempting to accept some infringements on liberty, I think it's necessary to have a philosophical framework through which to understand what limitations on liberty are justifiable and which aren't. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from xdominos -- A Good Product Without Serious Issue : I ordered and received a paperback copy of this book in a timely manner. Overall the book itself is of good construction quality and the paper is of good stock. I will note a minor packaging defect that has left a small spot of sticky residue upon the cover, however this is not significant enough to knock off a full star. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Richard Robins -- Essay on Personal Liberty or Civil Rights : Published in 1859, this an excellent discussion of the idea of "Liberty." I read this in Political Science 101.. now I'm reading it again. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Roger -- Simplifying the Law and human relations. : Much of what Mill writes is very inspiring. His concern for freedoms should issue a wake-up call to governments the world over. Mill offers some simple solutions to the world's problems by his anti authoritarian ideas. If practised, being ready to listen to others, to accept criticism and to be able to explain rationally what one thinks and believes would make social relations that much more easy going and without conflict. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Assltpnr -- JS Mill Rules : The writings of Mill, will endure for ever. These simple truths are a caution to the semi literate ambitious mediocrities we call the political classes today, as they were when he wrote. Like Paine and Smith he should be an examinational requirement for any one seeking public office. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 21, 2020 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Stephan Kyburz -- Original introduction is missing : It seems like the original introduction written by John Stuart Mill was replaced by an introduction written by W.L.Courtney. I wanted to find a quote in the book and figured out that it would have been in the original introduction. So if you want the full version of the book, check the contents carefully.
